In the “100 Top Values of The Year” section, Wine & Spirits (June) brought out the best value wines. Within the list, four Argentine wines won a place among the best wines. The selection was made from 2,670 wines priced USD 15 or less, tasted by the magazine’s panels and critics over the last 12 months
Argentine wines among the “100 Top Values of the Year”
The first is 2011 Alfredo Roca Malbec – Merlot that received 90 points. The wine was described by the panel this way: “This youthful blend is intensely fruity, its flavors framed in a firm texture that keep it refreshing and suggest match with anchovy pizza.
After it, comes 2010 Notro Mendoza Malbec with 90 points. “A juicy Malbec full of red fruit flavors, this has a firm backbone of acidity that holds the suave texture to a crisp line,” was said about this wine.
2010 Zorzal Tupungato Malbec with 93 points was one of the four Argentine wines included in the 100 best buys. “This Malbec grows at an eight-year-old vineyard in Gualtallary at 4,500 feet. Gualtallary’s calcareous soils influence the structure of this Malbec, tense with firm tannins, focused on the taste of fresh-picked cherries. A delicious wine that doesn`t resort to wood or hyper concentration, seducing instead with its fresh fruit and a solid structure that will stand up to the most powerful cuts of meat”.
Finally, with 91 points comes 2008 Loscano Mendoza Private Reserve Malbec. According to the critics: “Beyond its scents of coffee and almonds, this has an intriguing earthy note that gains prominence as the wine evolves in the air. The tannins and acidity are potent, partnering to hide the wine’s fruit for now. For the cellar.”
